Brief Bio Full Curriculum Vitae
Paula Rice is an active, producing artist and nationally known ceramic sculptor whose interests include the nature and mystery of the human body. She has presented workshops in such locations as the Sydney School of Art, Sydney, Australia; The Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass, Colorado; The Hawaii Craftsmen Council, Honolulu, Hawaii; and the Tennessee Arts Academy, Nashville, Tennessee. Her work is represented in collections in Denmark, Russia, Latvia, and across the United States.
Paula Rice earned a B.S. degree in Design from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; A Master of Education in Art from Penn State University, State College; and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She taught for a year in Tanzania, East Africa, and has traveled widely. She was married to the eminent ceramist, Don Reitz, from 1980 – 1998.
Paula Rice is Professor Emeritus of Ceramics in the School of Art at Northern Arizona University. A devoted teacher, many of her students are now professional artists and teachers across the United States. Among other awards she has received are NAU’s “Most Significant Creative or Artistic Award” in 2009 for “The Planet Series”, figurative interpretations in clay of the planets in our solar system; “Teacher of The Year” award in the College of Fine Art in 2003; and “Centennial Teacher of The Year Award” in the School of Fine Art in 1999.
Paula Rice is a passionate observer of the clear night sky in Flagstaff, Arizona, at 7,000 feet in altitude, the location of the discovery of the planet Pluto in 1930. She continues to create art with the themes of our humanity and our place in the cosmos. |
